Carrick Mollenkamp (formerly of the Wall Street Journal now self-employed) reminds me of Sherlock Holmes. And I am talking about the Basil Rathbone incarnation of Sherlock Holmes not the Robert Downey Jr. incarnation (although I do like those movies as well).
Although he didn’t have the story first back in January of 2011 (that was the Washington Post) he did figure out who the insider behind FX Analytics was way before anyone else, including BNYM…
And today he has done it again, not quite sure how. (Actually, I have a hunch that the bank must have leaked this.)
But still, you have to give him his due, he took the time and effort to dredge through tons and tons of information until he found enough to convince someone else that he knew more than he did — I bet Mollenkamp monitored state and local government websites waiting for one of the local governments to inadvertently drop a clue….which one did eventually.
And that is what separates the big fish from the little fish IMHO. Human beings like to envy smart and talented people (and I am sure Carrick is both) but always and in every case it is discipline and dedication that wins they day. Just being smart and talented ain’t enough.
I used to tell people about the Mike Wallace test — meaning, people shouldn’t get involved in anything they wouldn’t want Mike Wallace to investigate. Now I think I am going to change this to the Carrick Mollemkamp test.
