Today marks the first Continuing Legal Education Seminar on the Virginia Fraud Against Taxpayers Act
Today the Fairfax Bar Association will host the first-ever CLE seminar dealing specifically with the VFATA. The speakers will be myself, Guy Horlsey from the Virginia Office of the Attorney General, and Jeb White from Taxpayers Against Fraud.
Guy Horsley is the Special Assistant Attorney General and Coordinator for all things related to the VFATA in the OAG. Jeb White is Executive Director and CEO of Taxpayers Against Fraud.
Not surprisingly, turnout appears modest thus far. The seminar takes place from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the cafeteria of the Circuit Court for Fairfax County.
Tomorrow I let you know how the seminar turned out and I might consider posting the original materials if anyone is interested. You can view the flyer for the seminar here.
The Virginia Fraud Against Taxpayers Act helped the Commonwealth to recover more than $117 million dollars in FY 2007/2008. Remarkably, this was almost entirely the work of the OAG and, specifically, the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) within the OAG. Unlike the federal False Claims Act, where cases initiated by private individuals and their lawyers constitute the majority of the claims, the Virginia Bar has yet to step up to the plate and recognize the significance of the opportunity.
